Safeguarding: A culture of Vigilance and Wellbeing

At Kingsford Community School our systems, processes and policies operate with the best interests of children at their core. As a school we are committed to ensuring that consistent and effective safeguarding procedures are in place, and are constantly reviewed, to support pupils, families and staff.

In both our education and our safeguarding provision, our focus is always on taking the actions needed to enable all pupils to have the best possible outcomes. For this to be achieved not only does the quality of education matter but also disseminating and embedding a strong safeguarding culture throughout the school. Every single member of the Kingsford community plays an important part in this culture of vigilance.

In a recent Local Authority review, the school’s embedded safeguarding culture, both relational and environmental, was judged to be exceptional. You can find more about their findings in our news post here.

We have a Safeguarding Policy and appropriate procedures in place which are clearly communicated to all those on our school site. In addition we have a Child on Child Abuse Policy which supports staff in identifying risks and challenging inappropriate behaviour affecting pupil wellbeing.  All staff are trained in relation to child protection and other issues surrounding safeguarding. Our pupils are encouraged to talk and are listened to, knowing there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried or have concerns. Pupils can also share concerns about themselves or their peers using designated “Tell Us” post boxes around the school.

Pupil wellbeing is paramount at Kingsford, and the strength of the school’s welcoming community is tangible. There is extensive support available at Kingsford Community School to ensure that every pupil feels safe and looked after. According to our latest Ofsted report, “Pupils said that the school is a safe place to be, whoever you are.” Two designated Mental Health Leads ensure that positive mental health for all pupils and staff remains at the forefront of strategic planning and teaching practice. Pupils who need additional support are provided with mentoring through the school’s Emotional Literacy Support Advice (ELSA) programme.
