Gold and Silver in prestigious HSK Level 3 certificate for Kingsford's Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP) pupils

Kingsford Community School has once again led the way among state and private schools with its pupils achieving exceptional results in international examinations, and securing top scholarships as a result.

100% of the school’s pupils taking part in the rigorous Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP), delivered by the UCL Institute of Education in partnership with the British Council, secured at least Gold or Silver in the prestigious HSK Level 3 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) Chinese proficiency test. 31 of the 38 pupils secured the top Gold mark (scoring at least 221, well above the national average of 170), providing concrete demonstration to prospective employers, foreign institutions and other international organisations that their linguistic ability is exceptional.

Every single MEP pupil at Kingsford is now eligible for a scholarship to study at top universities in China such as Tsinghua, PKU and Shanghai Jiao Tong. Each scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses worth up to $30,000 USD (£22,000 pound sterling), meaning that collectively the 38 pupils in this year's cohort have secured £836,000 in funding.

Kingsford Community School is a hub school for the Mandarin Excellence Programme, leading the way among the now 45 UCL Confucius Classrooms in the country, and having won an award as the Best Confucius Classroom in the world.

Pupils joining Kingsford Community School in Year 7 have the opportunity to sign up to the intensive Mandarin Excellence Programme, and the number of pupils continuing their Mandarin studies through their school and to A level and beyond are increasing each year. Kingsford Community School teachers also support the A level studies at the top local sixth form college London Academy of Excellence, providing continuity and support for the onward success of the school’s Mandarin pupils.

Mandarin has been identified as one of the most important languages for the UK’s future prosperity, and through the MEP Kingsford pupils experience a transformational international experience that prepares them to be linguistically competent, culturally informed, and highly employable.

The Rt Hon Nadhim Zahawi MP, Secretary of State for Education, wrote to Head Teacher Joan Deslandes OBE to congratulate the “phenomenal talent” of the school’s pupils. When presenting the certificates to the pupils, Ms Deslandes said “I have profound respect for all you have achieved. By tackling and excelling in this demanding international qualification, you have raised the bar and shown just what Kingsford Community School pupils are capable of. I am so proud of you all!”
