Improving young lives with innovative Charter

Kingsford pupils contribute to improving lives of young people through innovative Charter

On Tuesday 8th March 2022, the London Borough of Newham Council Cabinet officially committed to implementing an innovative Young People’s Charter designed to create a safer, more inclusive Newham in which its young people can flourish and thrive.

Kingsford Community pupils in our current Year 10 cohort, who are members of our School Council and Prefect team have been working closely with the Newham Local Authority since 2020 to plan and develop the Charter. They played a fundamental role in seeing it come to life.

The intention is that different sectors of the borough- local business, schools, hospitals, parents- can use the Charter to work together, respect and effectively support the young people of Newham.

Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz said: “Our Young People’s Charter has been created with young people at its heart and we will continue to engage with them fully to develop our ambitious Children and Young People’s Plan. We are committed to increasing opportunities for all young people and ensuring there is a relentless focus on putting them first.”

In this video some of our pupils, together with other young people who have contributed to this important project, speak passionately about the values they believe should shape the future of their local community.

“I got involved with the NYPC because I wanted to improve the wellbeing of Newham teenagers”, said Year 10 pupil Marwa. “I feel very happy that our voices have been listened to and that our ideas have come to life. I hope that in the future the charter will go beyond Newham and to other boroughs.”

Head Teacher Joan Deslandes said: “I couldn’t be prouder of our pupils’ contribution to this important project for our local community. At Kingsford Community School our pupils learn the true value of leadership that makes a difference. They leave us fully equipped as global citizens who have a transformative impact on the world they live and work in. This project clearly demonstrates their aspiration for a better future for themselves and those around them, and their commitment to seeing it become a reality.”
